We were struggling with Pepsi’s weight loss ourselves at home. We were under the nurse at the vets, she lost at first but then put weight back on. When we saw the vet she said that she could refer to the weight clinic and we knew we had to do something as she may not be with for much longer unless she lost weight. You were our last resort. The first appointment was very informative, I thought you would read us the riot act but it was not like that. You explained everything in great detail and when we saw the Dexa scan and it showed how much fat she had around her heart and waist we were really shocked. We now understood how the weight was affecting her when running around and why she had to stop and rest so often. Also how it was affecting her joints with weight because she had trouble getting out of her box with the extra weight.
When she started on the new food we didn’t have any problems she took to it really well. We did not find it difficult weighing it out once we were in a routine. Pepsi seemed to cope ok with the food change, it was harder for us because at first she would stare at us for her treats but eventually she realised she was not getting anything else. The longer she was on it the easier it was. When you told she was only allowed 180 grams a day and we weighed it out and saw how much there was we thought that would not be enough. But we spaced it out through the day after her walks, then she knew just when she would get her food and not beg continually. You have to get them in a routine and once we were in it, there was no problem with begging, she just knew when it was meal times.
Any time that we needed to ask you anything you was only at the end of the phone and you was always there if we were struggling.
When we saw the Dexa scan after she had lost the weight we could not believe how much difference it had made. She looked so much leaner.
Pepsi is maintaining her weight loss. It is a lot easier now because of the weight she has lost she has more energy. She can run round the park for over an hour now. Sometimes we go twice a day. So with the extra energy she has it is lot easier to maintain her weight. She is a lot better walking because she used to have problems getting up out of her box when she had been in it for a while but she does not have that problem now. Losing those extras kilos have given her new lease of life. If I had to I would do the same again. It was hard to do because when she looked at me with her big brown eyes I felt really tight for not giving her treats, but when I see her running round the park it was all worth it. She is 11 this year and I think it has added years to her life. In fact someone that I had not seen for a while asked if it was the same dog because she was used to seeing her chubby and when I said yes, she said that she looks like a different dog.
